Kay Carter - Biography

After retirement in 2008, I began an intentional and intense exploration of the world of visual arts. Previously my work, in human service, had been challenging, worthy, and rewarding. I didn’t know, however, how much delight one could experience until I focused my energy on my art work.

My work reflects an intuitive reaction to the cycles of the Earth. For 40 years I worked in human service. Now in retirement I am delighted to spend full time working in my studio in Hampden. Guided by a spiritual response to nature, my work often starts with writings which reflect nature as I observe it. The writings lead me into design and on to painting. My work is informed by color, texture, and form in nature. Often it is non-representational. It focuses around the intimate energy, beauty, and magic that I observe in the changing environment. I enjoy using a variety of mediums, experimenting with ways to express myself in my work.

My study of studio art has been cumulative and eclectic over many years, starting with an inspired teacher in junior high school who opened a window for me to the joy of creating and extending to the post retirement years in which I have followed a studio art curriculum at the University of Maine. My passion for creating over the years has led to explorations of pottery, calligraphy, Jacobean crewel work, and rug hooking. I am indebted to teachers with whom I studied and from whom I continue to learn.

Recently my work has been shown at a single person show, Close to Nature, at the Bangor Public Library. There will be another single person show of my work in March and April 2020 at the Wilson Center, College Ave, Orono, ME. It is also on display at Long Time Sun Gallery in Hampden Maine. This year I was juried into the 2020 Art Maine Annual Guide, Artist Spotlight.

I am a member of the Bangor Art Society, Plein Air Painters of Maine, and the Union of Maine Visual Artists.
